COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) - A Columbus tax preparer is behind bars and may be there for a while.  Gregory Carter pleaded guilty in federal court this morning to count one of a 25 count indictment.  He admitted to helping prepare fraudulent tax returns while he worked at Tax One on Buena Vista Road.

The indictment was handed down in October of 2010.  Count one relates to a return filed in 2009, where Carter helped falsely claim a Schedule C Business loss for more than $58,000, a First Time Home Buyer tax credit for $7,500 and education credits of more than $1,000.  Prosecutors say this inflated the refund for the client and meant a loss of money to the Internal Revenue Service. Court documents reveal the client claimed a refund for more than $21,000 when it should have been a little over $2,000.

  • The IRS raided Tax One in 2009.  Carter was arrested after indictment in October 2010 and released on bond.

He was re-arrested in April 2011 for violating conditions of his pre-trial release and has been in the Muscogee County Jail since.

Carter's sentencing is set for October.  According to the plea agreement, he will also pay restitution to the IRS in an amount not to exceed $245,573.  That's was the total tax loss to the IRS.  The agreement stated Carter helped to prepare 46 fraudulent tax returns from tax years 2006-2008.  In addition to business losses, the First Time Home Buyer tax credit and education credit, the returns also falsely claimed child care and dependent credits, Earned Income credits and Telephone Excise Tax credits.
