East Alabama insulation maker to close its doors

LANETT, AL (WXTX) - Dozens are losing their jobs as an insulation maker closes its doors.

Knauf Insulation announced Tuesday that it gave notices to employees at its Lanett, AL plant.

The Chambers County plant currently employs 146 people. Knauf Insulation says it will leverage all available resources to address the needs of Lanett employees.  We are told that these employees will have an opportunity to relocate voluntarily to other Knauf Insulation sites in the U.S.

CEO Mark Andrews of Knauf Insulation North America made the following statement:

"This announcement comes as the insulation industry, along with building materials manufacturers in general, continues to feel the negative effects of the dramatic slowdown in the residential housing market.  Unfortunately, recent indicators make it apparent that the construction market will not rebound in the short term.

We have delayed this action as long as possible through new product launches and share growth. We are noW forced to make strategic adjustments in our production numbers in order to realign supply with demand.

It is a difficult decision to mothball a plant. We are a family owned business that is very proud of our products, our employees and the communities we serve. It is our sincere regret that we must take this action at this time. We reexamine the status of the Lanett facility as market conditions change."

The plant makes insulation for homes. Customers will not be affected by this action.
