18-wheeler hits black bear on Interstate 85

MACON COUNTY, AL (WTVM) - News Leader 9 has learned a bear was killed by a motorist on Interstate 85 in Macon County, AL.

The Alabama Department of Natural Resources says a young male black bear was struck by an 18-wheeler on the interstate.

Tennessee, Georgia, Florida and parts of Alabama have breeding black bear populations. We are told since they have high reproductive rates, it is believed that some male bears are wondering into Alabama to find new territories and new females.

Alabama DNR adds, "This bear is "not common, but also not unusual. If you see one, they are mostly likely male and looking for a mate or food. If you see one, leave it alone".
