Storms zap power to 50,000 in metro Atlanta

ATLANTA (AP) - Authorities say strong thunderstorms knocked outpower to at least 50,000 customers in the metro Atlanta area.

Georgia Power officials said the customers who lost powerWednesday evening were scattered throughout the metro area. Companyofficials say the Duluth and Lawrenceville areas were hard-hit,with thousands of customers in those communities losing power for atime.

Utility officials say residents in the Dalton and Athens areasalso were without power Wednesday evening.

The Athens Banner-Herald reports that emergency crews were responding to several downed trees and small fires Wednesday night.

Officials there say they closed Vaughn Road in western Clarke County due to downed lines.

Gwinnett County fire officials say a tree toppled by the stormsfell on a house in Lawrenceville, but no injuries were reported.
