FORT BENNING, GA (WTVM) – Fort Benning's newest garrison commander is no stranger to Columbus. Colonel Jeffery Fletcher grew up in the Fountain City.

He assumed the duties from Colonel Thomas Macdonald during a change of command ceremony on Tuesday. The Kendrick High School graduate credits the people here for his success.

"Education is key and the teachers and neighbors and friends I grew up with all pushed one another. If you'd asked back at Kendrick if I thought I was going to be a military officer I probably would have laughed at you. But the grades and focus on education gave me those opportunities," says Col. Fletcher.

Colonel Fletcher's wife, Patricia, is also a Columbus native and graduate of Columbus High School.
