PINE MOUNTAIN VALLEY, GA (WTVM) - Three hundred workers at Cagle's Chicken could soon be out of jobs. The company announced Monday that it would get rid of its second shift at its plant in Pine Mountain Valley.

A young man we caught up with has worked second shift at Cagle's for more than a year. Fearful of losing his job he did not want to be identified.

"We all came to work they put a notice up on the board, stating that as of August 19th they would start laying off the employees."

In a statement released from Cagles Inc Tuesday, the plant in Pine Mountain processes more than 500,000 chickens per week and currently employs about 640 workers.

The company says this time last year the plant processed about 100,000 more chickens per week but that number fell after the prices of chicken feed increased over 34% in 2010 because of corn prices.

The statement also says chicken feed prices along with the decline in demand for boneless chicken ultimately caused a reduction in chicken production at the plant. Leaving people like the second shift worker we spoke with out of a job.

"Basically right now that's my way of living I'm concerned about it and I'm shocked just like everyone else was."

A release from Cagle's Incorporated says the layoffs are expected to begin at the end of August.
