AUBURN, AL (WTVM) – Both the Auburn and Opelika city councils approved a 1% sales tax increase.

Residents will now be paying 9% in sales tax, which is slightly higher than the state average.

This will bring in millions of more dollars for each city.

City leaders in both Auburn and Opelika have said they hope to use some of the money for education including upgrading or building new schools as well as improving roads.
