TALBOT COUNTY, GA (WTVM) – The last two candidates in the race for Talbot County sheriff will face off in a runoff election on July 19.

The current interim Sheriff Tom Wimberly got 677 votes which was almost 43% and Bobby Gates who's a retired sheriff's deputy secured 495 votes which is 31% of the votes Tuesday night.

Either Wimberly or Gates will replace the former sheriff 71-year-old Herman Howard who died of a massive heart attack earlier this year.

Herman was the county's first black sheriff.
