Widening on Moon Road Reduces Traffic

COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) - Midday traffic along Moon Road can be a pain especially with the new widening project in full swing. For Mark's City Grill Manager Michele Weed, the project is a solution to a major problem in the area.

"For us it's just going to make traffic in and out of here easier it's going to make life easier for everybody all the business that in this little area," Michele Weed said.

According to city planning director Rick Jones, the project has been in the works for a number of years. Jones says the city figured now is the best time to move ahead with the project.

"It's designed really to help ease traffic coming off of Veterans down Moon and eventually in to Whittlesey Boulevard," Jones said.

Jones says the plan is to expand the two lane road into a four lane highway beginning at Veterans Parkway. This would mark phase one of the project. Phase two would begin at Whittlesey and continue down Moon Road, making that section a three lane highway.

"It's going to be some inconvenience if you travel down Moon for at least the next year in terms of getting back forth."

The four lane portion of Moon Road will have a divided median and sidewalks on both sides of the road. For Michele Weed and other business managers in the area these improvements have been a long time coming.

"Our biggest thing right now is the light here at Knology way and moon road which we are thrilled to have a light there the traffic is awful," Michele said.
