COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) -

Many East Alabama kids, cooled off from the heat today in the Sportsplex's pool all waiting with excitement for Splash Park, just a few feet away, to re-open. Sam Bailey with Opelika Parks and Rec says, "samples all came back clean and clear of course everybody wants to caution on the error of being cautious and doing what's safe so we stayed closed."

Renee Wheat who comes often to Splash Park says she believes it's safe and her children are thrilled it's back open.

"Yes I sure do they absolutely love coming here, swimming, and so we're just waiting for it to open."

Between June 12th and 18th, the Alabama department of public health says 5 children became extremely ill after visiting splash park, three contracted, Bailey says they're baffled where it came from since the tests came back negative. "We don't know and that's what's so frustrating in reality. It's frustrating to us that we don't know what happened and really no one knows what happened."

Samples of water, equipment, water decks and more were taken by the health department and Thursday, additional test were taken to be safe.

They gave the OK for the park to be re-opened Friday.

Bailey says they'll do all the testing and anything they can to help out, "We're just focusing now on the kids that are sick. It's sickening to us in Opelika the community; they're part of our community and part of our Sportsplex family."

For now Renee Wheat and her kids are just hoping their favorite summer hang-out will stay open and clear.
