Soldier dies in Columbus crash, teen faces vehicular homicide

COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) - A teenager is facing homicide charges in connection with a car crash that killed a highly decorated soldier.

Jack  Hughes, 17, is charged with vehicular homicide for the crash that happened around 5:30 Monday morning near the corner of University Ave and Macon Road.

Sergeant Jerome Owens, 39, from Valdosta, Georgia was killed in the accident.

Hughes also faces DUI, red light violation and drug charges.  He is accused of having Ecstasy and prescription pills.

The Columbus Police report shows Hughes ran a red light traveling North on Macon Road.  Owens was turning left onto Macon Road from Elm Drive when Hughes Ford F-150 struck his Nissan Altima. 

Owens was a combat medic and stationed at Fort Benning since July 2009.

Hughes has bonded out of the Muscogee County Jail. He will not appear in court for a Recorders Court hearing. News Leader 9 is following this story. We'll have the latest information as soon as it becomes available.
