Soldier dies in Columbus crash, teen faces vehicular homicide

COLUMBUS, GA (WXTX) - A teenager is facing homicide charges in connection with a car crash that killed a highly decorated soldier.

Jack  Hughes, 17, is charged with vehicular homicide for the crash that happened around 5:30 Monday morning near the corner of University Ave and Macon Road.

Sergeant Jerome Owens, 39, from Valdosta, Georgia was killed in the accident.

Columbus police say the suspect, Hughes, also faces a couple drug charges, accused of having Ecstasy and prescription pills.

Owens was a combat medic and stationed at Fort Benning since July 2009.
