SMITHS STATION, AL (WTVM) - Construction continues at the new Smiths Station High School as they build parking lots and floor the two new gyms.

As Principal Dr. Jason Yohn walks through the school, he takes it all in, thrilled with every detail. "The size of the classrooms and the open spaces and the things we haven't had up to this point is what I like most about this building."

Built for 1500 students, with 84 classrooms, the new school has a band room big enough to hold several classrooms, state of the art science labs, an automotive shop class, theater and broadcast journalism areas, and more. Senior Zharee Wilson, will be the first graduating class out of the new high school, "we're all just excited to see how it looks there's a lot of tension and excitement and we're ready to see it."

"Everybody's excited any time a new school is built, it energizes a community, gives us a sense of pride for our school and our community." Said Dr. Yohn

With a career tech center, fine arts, athletics and academics, Dr. Yohn says every student will have the tools to have a bright future, whether you decide to go on to college, community college, or work in the community. "Our goal is to have something for everybody, there's a program you can use whether it's fine art, athletics, clubs, academic competition we want to provide something for everyone."

Dr. Yohn says he expects the school to be complete by mid-July.
