Jehovah's Witnesses conferences brings thousands to Columbus

COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) - Jeanette Mitchell has been attending the Jehovah's Witnesses conference in Columbus for the past twenty years. She brought her children hoping that the conference inspires them and thousands of others.

"Getting many people as we can to learn about our mighty God Jehovah and looking forward to a good future," Mitchell said.

Some here say Jehovah's Witnesses are often isolated by others in society because of their beliefs.

"We are trying to model our lives after the First Century Christians that is that we are representing the highest God , Jehovah, and his son Christ Jesus," Rowe said.

According to several people we spoke to at the conference, Jehovah's Witnesses believe God is Jehovah and Jesus is his son. They follow the Bible as God's word and believe that God's Kingdom is a real government in heaven that will eventually take control of the earth.

Jehovah's Witnesses also do not serve in the military. They point to the Bible saying 'love thy enemies, not fight them'. Blood intake or transfusion is also considered wrong.

An elder in the religion, from Lanett, AL Douglas Rowe talked to us about members knocking on doors in neighborhoods. What some consider a nuisance, Rowe calls it extending an invitation to fellowship.

"We are showing them what God's word has to say on his kingdom and we invite them to have a real home bible study and learn what the bible really teaches," Rowe said.

Mitchell says her questions were answered by going to the conference and suggest that others wanting to know more should also attend.

"Everything is backed with scriptures and means everlasting life for me and my family as for those that are interested in listening and want to know more about the bible,' Mitchell said.
