LAGRANGE, GA (WTVM) - UPDATE: The 4th of July should be for families to spend time together celebrating, but after a series of tragic events, that isn't the case for one LaGrange family. Instead the loved ones of Tonya Bray are planning her funeral.

Tonya Bray's body is currently at the Georgia State Crime Lab undergoing an autopsy. Her family has made plans to hold a funeral for her Saturday at 1 o'clock at the New Community Church on Davis Road in LaGrange. If you would like to send donations and gifts, Lakes-Dunson-Robertson Funeral Home in LaGrange is handling the arrangements.

LaGrange Police are investigating a murder that took place Sunday morning that left a mother dead and landed her long-time boyfriend in jail.

Sunday morning, just before 10 o'clock, the LaGrange Police Department responded to a car accident near the intersection of Berryhill Circle and Ragland Street. A female victim was found dead in the driver's seat, but upon further investigation, police say it wasn't the accident that killed her.

They tell us 37-year-old Tonya Bray had been shot in the head. She was transported to the West Georgia Medical Center where she was officially pronounced dead.

As officers were working the crime scene, Jeffery Jones turned himself into police and told them he was responsible for killing his long-time girlfriend Tonya Bray. Police say he explained that he drove up beside her car and shot her before her car veered off the road and crashed.

New details indicate she was shot during a car chase down Ragland Street. Witnesses tell police a green car, driven by Jeffery Jones, was chasing Bray's silver car, and firing several shots.

We're told the couple had been together for 18 years and had a child together.

Jones has been charged with murder and is being held in the Troup County Jail. The LaGrange Police Department is still looking into what lead up to this 4th of July weekend murder.

Tonya Bray was the mother of Quan Bray, a former Troup County High School receiver and Auburn University football player. Quan is currently an incoming freshman at Auburn after finishing his high school football career playing for his uncle Charles Flowers at Troup County. Quan's Auburn bio also lists Jeffery Jones as a parent along with Tonya Bray.

Auburn head coach Gene Chizik issued a statement, "Our thoughts and prayers are with Quan and his entire family during this extraordinarily difficult time. This is a terrible tragedy, but the Auburn Family will support Quan in every way possible throughout the grieving and healing process ahead. Quan is a great young man with a bright future, and we will be there for him every step of the way."
