2 sent to hospital for severe burns following explosion

COLUMBUS, GA (WXTX) -Columbus Fire Marshall Ricky Shores tell News Leader Nine that 53 year-old Mitchell Thomas and 38 year-old Joseph Knight were both transported to the hospital Tuesday morning after an explosion at ABC Metal Recycling on Martin Luther King Boulevard in Columbus.

Mitchell suffered 2nd and 3rd degree burns to his upper body and is being transported to the burn center in Augusta, Georgia. Knight suffered 1st and 2nd degree burns and is currently being treated at the Medical Center.

According to Chief Shores the men were trying to get a part off of a car at the metal yard when the explosion happened.

We reached out to the owner of ABC Metal Recycling he did not want to go on camera with us today but did say he was deeply sorry about what happened and the incident is being thoroughly investigated.
