Woman claims sheriff's deputy impersonator came to her home in 2009

COLUMBUS, GA - The man Columbus police say impersonated a Muscogee County sheriff's deputy, entered a woman's home, and stole items from the house, is facing a new charge, and police say the crime happened in 2009.

Police say a woman came forward this week saying in December of 2009, Binkeve Walton came to her door wearing a black shirt and khaki pants and claiming he was a sheriff's deputy.  The woman told police Walton said he needed inside to search for a person who had been served a warrant for arrest.

Police say she allowed him into her apartment, and she said nothing was taken from her home.  However, a few days later, she told police she had a burglary at her home.  Police say they have not connected Walton to the burglary.

The victim told police she believed for the past 2 years that Walton was a sheriff's deputy until she saw his mug shot and the pictures of him dressed as a sheriff's deputy on TV.  She came forward and identified Walton as the man who came to her doorstep that day.

Walton is now facing a new charge of impersonating an officer.  He will appear in recorder's court tomorrow at 2:00 pm.
