COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) - The Columbus Dive Team has recovered the body of a missing man from the Chattahoochee River.

The man's body was found near the Dillingham Street Bridge around 8:45 a.m., just 50 feet from shore.

Battalion Chief Keith Watson says the unidentified man went down in the waters behind the RiverWalk near the Dillingham Street Bridge around 8:30 last night.

Search efforts resumed Friday morning after witnesses reported Thursday night seeing a man jump into the river near the 13th Street Bridge. Witnesses told police the man was holding a sign saying, "Will work for food," before he apparently jumped in and swam to a rock. After which, he was swept into the waters.

A fisherman says he heard the man saying "Help me! Help me!" But there was not enough time to react. Then, the man suddenly went underwater and disappeared.

Two separate drownings have occurred on the river within several weeks.  Divers tell us there are many strong and swift currents. They don't recommend anyone to swim there. If you just have to get in the water, you should always wear a life jacket.

The man's body will be sent to the state crime lab in Atlanta for an autopsy.  We are told the man appears to be in his late 50s.

We will continue to follow this story with updates at WTVM.com and on News Leader 9 at Noon.
