"Summer of Love Tour" brings big name talent to Columbus

COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) - Friday night it was George Clinton, who performed to a crowd at the River Center, and Comedian D.L. Hughley made a stop to do a free show for troops on Fort Benning.

And it all tops off Saturday night as national recording artists Avant, Ginuwine, and Tank perform to a crowd at the Columbus Civic Center.

As Columbus continues to grow in population, more artists feel that coming to the Fountain City will be a good investment in reaching their audiences below Atlanta. James Johnson, CEO of Supershop Entertainment helped bring the event to Columbus.

Johnson says it's a lot of work but all worth it to bring big city entertainment to the Chattahoochee Valley.

"You have to rent the civic center and of course you have to advertise it so it's a lot of dollars that's involved in putting together a show but as a promoter we try to keep the ticket sales very low and comfortable for the people," Johnson said.

Johnson says that the many events that are taking place this weekend is just a sneak peak at what is to come in the near future.

"People can stay in their own city and come to a good quality show and enjoy themselves without spending $100 of gas money to travel to Atlanta to actually see a show."

Johnson's says one of the major concerns with big named acts in the past is the artists not showing up. Over the past few years that has all since changed.

"All the artists have been showing up at the shows so now it's just more of a city coming together to say we want to support the actual night life and the entertain business in Columbus."
