COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) - Six men have been arrested and charged with dog fighting.

Two Columbus Police officers arrived at Garden Drive off Cusseta Road Sunday night around 6.

Police reports say the officers heard dogs barking and growling.  As they approached 2702 Garden Drive, they could see two dogs fighting.  The report states several dogs were staked down in the back yard and two pit bulls were fighting in the center of the yard.

The officers watched six men laughing and antagonizing the dogs.

One officer drew his weapon and yelled for all of them to get down.

Animal Control was called out to remove the animals from the scene.

The police report states one of the animals was tied to a swing set and the others were staked down.  All of the animals are said to have scratches and visible scars and appeared to be malnourished.

During the investigation and arrest, several people came up to the home.  When asked by police, they said they did not know that anyone was fighting dogs at their home.

Roger Thomas, Douglas Armour Sr., Douglas Armour Jr., Joseph Best, Marcus Thomas, and Courtney Dixon were arrested and charged with Dog fighting.  That is a federal offense.

Armour Sr was also charged with providing false information to a law enforcement officer and disorderly conduct while intoxicated.  Police reports he gave a false name to police.

Best told officers he owned one of the dogs that were fighting.
