TALBOT COUNTY, GA (WXTX) – Retired Bobby Gates defeated interim Sheriff Tom Wimberly in a run-off election for sheriff on Tuesday.
Unofficial numbers from Talbot County officials give Gates 56 percent of the vote to Wimberly's 44 percent.
The run-off election comes on the heels of an undercover federal investigation that ended last month with the arrest of three Talbot County sheriff's deputies and a jailer.
The deputies are all accused of using threat, force and violence to extort money from federal agents.
The run-off election was held to replace former Sheriff Herman Howard who died earlier this year. Howard was the county's first black sheriff.
