COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) – Governor Nathan Deal had a busy schedule Wednesday when he made a visit to Columbus.

Deal toured the National Infantry Museum and spent time at the Columbus Rotary Committee. During one stop, the governor answered questions on several topics including immigration.

Governor Deal says Georgia's law, compared to other statutes in other states, does not make legal status in the country a reason someone can be detained or stopped.  He says it is only a second offense.

"The White House has initiates another program called safe communities in which they have made available a database for local law enforcement when someone is in custody to be able to verify that the status in terms of immigration is for that individual," says Deal.

Governor says Georgia is scheduled to have that program initiated in the near future.
