COLUMBUS, GA (WXTX) - The attorney for a man accused of killing Heath Jackson says he had to find out his client could get the death penalty from local news media.

Muscogee County District Attorney Julia Slater announced yesterday that she would seek the death penalty in the case against Ricardo Strozier. Strozier is accused of killing Heath Jackson at his home back in September of last year.

Strozier's lawyer Roger Montgomery says he learned about his client on Wednesday morning when he picked up the newspaper at a convenience store

District Attorney Julia Slater says her office had no record of an attorney for Strozier. We asked Slater about why the state is seeking the death penalty in this case versus other high profile case.

Slater told us that each murder case is different and the two cases should not be compared against one another.
