ConsumerWatch: Get free school supplies

COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) - Back to school shopping doesn't have to break the budget.

The ConsumerWatch team scoured ads, websites and blogs for weeks to find the best bargains on school supplies.  I took my own second grader's list hoping to score some savings.

We shopped at a total of five stores and bought more than 20 items.  We found lots of good deals, some of the supplies were under $1. We got pencils for a penny and a ream of copy paper for a penny after a rebate. Kleenex and wide ruled paper was free, because it came from my stockpile.

Other deep discounts include folders for .13 a piece and crayons for a quarter.  My grand total was $13.45.

Other tips:

Ask stores to price match - Most will, with the exception of extreme deals.  This is especially true for stores that sell the same products like two, office supply stores.  You can even take the ad with you.

Shop During the Sales Tax Holiday - A netbook that's almost $250 will be about $20 cheaper in Phenix City, August 5-7.

Shop Your Closet - When it comes to clothes, look through the closet first.  Kids don't need 20 new outfits for the first week of school!  When you do buy, shop at stores that are offering sales and where you can use a coupon on top of the sale.
