COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) - New construction will soon be popping up all over Phenix City as city officials start on several projects. The latest land purchase by the city council took place on 5th Street South.
The area behind the Boys & Girls Club may just look like a big empty grass lot, but in the coming months it's going to be the scene for several sports activities in south Phenix City.
Phenix City council members voted to purchase eight parcels of land located on 5th Street South, including the existing Boys & Girls Club facility.
"We're going to remodel the building itself and also add soccer fields, a football field, basketball courts, and a swimming pool," explained Phenix City Manager Wallace Hunter.
The land purchase will cost the city $125,000, but City Manager Wallace Hunter says its tax payer's money going right back to benefit the tax payers, "It's a good investment for our youth departments, our Parks and Recreations Department, and for the city of Phenix City. It's a sister operation going on at Idle Hour Park. This encompasses our city to make sure we have equality in our city."
The new sports fields will also be a great asset for the population growth associated with BRAC.
