Getting ready for the first day of school

COLUMBUS, GA - As kids around Muscogee County get ready to head back to school Monday, some may have some first day jitters especially those heading to school for the first time.

Walking into a Columbus elementary school to meet her Kindergarten teacher for the first time at open house does not scare Hannah Wilkins.  After all, she is a pro having aced pre-school at Reese Road Leadership Academy last year.

However, if you have some kindergartners going to school for the first time, listen up:  Hannah will tell you what it is all about.

"Read books and draw."

She said it is not all about work either.

"Sometimes take a little nap."

Hannah's mom Tera Wilkins said she is looking forward to what her youngest child will learn at school.

"I'm excited to get her reading.  Really, I mean, she's done a lot over the summer to get ready for it.  So, I'm excited to see where her reading level is," said Wilkins.

Hannah's new teacher Ashley Vannoy has been teaching elementary school for 12 years.  Her daughter Reagan Reid is excited about learning in kindergarten as well.

"Some things that my momma taught her kids," said Reid.

Vannoy knows how important it is to talk to your child about that first day of learning and gives some tips to parents.

"Bring their children to school, find their classroom.  If they have the opportunity to meet their teacher then they are less apprehensive if they know what to expect before they get here, and to read a lot with their kids," said Vannoy.

With just two days left in the summer break, Hannah's mom said they will be heading to Chuckie Cheese one last time before Hannah has to hit the books.
