Tornado victims awarded posthumous degrees

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. (AP) - The families of five tornado victims accepted posthumous degrees from the University of Alabama.

The Birmingham News reported that the diplomas were awarded at the school's commencement ceremony Saturday. University officials say they were among the more than 4,000 students who received degrees at the special spring/summer commencement.

David and Darlene Harrison, of Texas, accepted a diploma on behalf of their daughter Ashley Therese Harrison.

Darlene Harrison told the Birmingham newspaper that receiving the diploma has helped heal the pain of losing her daughter, a senior who'd been set to graduate

The April 27 tornado left 47 dead when it ripped through Tuscaloosa.
