COLUMBUS, GA (WXTX) - It's the dog days of a very hot summer for some 30 thousand students that will head back to school in Muscogee County on Monday. Dakota Leon is ready for that first day but wants to squeeze in some last minute fun before its time to hit the books.

"I come out here a lot and do hockey practice and stuff like that," Leon said.

The new Ice Rink opened its doors in April giving people a new option for public skating.

"I like it because instead of waiting over there for the Columbus to get done, you can actually come here and do it a lot," Leon said.

"It's wonderful to see them come out be afraid of the ice, be afraid of falling, use the walker and then an hour later they are skating around without the walker and eating at the concession stands," Rishard said.

Like Dakota other eager young people came out to cool off at ice the rink.

"I've ice skated before like coming here for him to practice but I'm more of a soccer player," Kaitlyn said.

But Dakota's skills remain unmatched. I asked my new friend to show me a thing or two on the ice. After all he's pretty good on the ice.

Rink manager and former Columbus Cottonmouths player Marcell Rishard says that during the summer they've seen a lot of foot traffic.

"We've had the YMCA, church groups, Girls Inc and different companies coming in," Rishard said.

Though it's almost time for kids to head back to school Rishard is hoping that children like Dakota find their way to the ice rink after school.
