WARNER ROBINS, Ga. (AP) - The U.S. Department of Defense says a combat medic from Warner Robins has been killed in Afghanistan.
Authorities say U.S. Army Spc. Mark J. Downer died Friday when his unit was attacked by a rocket-propelled grenade in Kandahar province. The 23-year-old was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 32nd Infantry Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 10th Mountain Division at Fort Drum, N.Y.
The Telegraph of Macon reports that Downer joined the Army in late 2009 and was deployed to Afghanistan in March of this year. He is survived by a child, his mother and father.
