SMITHS STATION, AL (WTVM)  - While thousands of Muscogee County students headed to school on Monday, they are getting ready to do the same in East Alabama.  That is where some students and their parents got a sneak peek at the new Smiths Station High School.

Three years and tens of millions of dollars later, the new Smiths Station High School needs just a few finishing touches before students start going to class there next week.

Rising senior Elizabeth Elledge was one of hundreds trying to map out where their new classes are and getting their new schedules.  Her mom, Jennifer Elledge, says the new school is long overdue.

"It's something that we really needed.  The old high school was crowded and we finally get to expand and it's wonderful," said Elledge.

Smiths Station Principal Jason Yohn broke down the numbers for us: a 265,000 square ft school with 84 classrooms, 8 tennis courts, special theater classes, and more.

"We started 3 years ago with our freshmen, telling them they were going to be the first grade to graduate from the new facility and that time is now here for them to begin their senior year.  So, they are very excited about being the first class," said Yohn.

He says the school can hold about 1,500 students with extra classrooms set aside for future growth.

"We have spaces built culinary arts which we did not staff those positions at this time and the all the mechanics shops that we're not going to staff at this time, but hopefully, we're going to grow a program of some sort into those locations."

Senior Elledge says she will not be around to see that, and while, she loves the new building, she is ready to say good-bye.

"I can't wait to get out of high school.  I can't wait to graduate."

There are other preview nights for students at the new Smith Station High School.  Juniors are to come Tuesday and Sophomores on Wednesday.  On both nights, the preview is from 5:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. eastern.
