Murder suspect admits to detectives to shooting his friend

COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) - A murder suspect who turned himself over to authorities Monday, admitted to investigators to shooting his friend.

Dewayne Williams, 30, was arrested Monday afternoon following a manhunt.

Williams told investigators that he and the victim, Keyonna Chapple, were in a home on Fisk Avenue when they got into an argument around 4:45 a.m. Monday.

In Recorders Court, a detective recounted Chapple was intoxicated and the two went outside to settle the argument.  The detective added when Chapple attempted to hit Williams, Williams shot at him. Williams told detectives that he thought he grazed his shoulder and ran from the scene.  Chapple was pronounced dead a short time later at the Medical Center.

Williams says he ran away and took a nap, but when he woke up, he saw on the news that his friend had died. That's when he decided to turn himself in.

Police say when Williams turned himself in; he had a 9 mm pistol on him that was used in the crime.

Authorities tell us Williams just got out of jail in February of this year, after serving 8 years for aggravated assault.

Wednesday morning, Williams' mother asked the judge if authorities will do a psych evaluation on her son. The judge responded to her that he will recommend it, but he cannot assure it.

Williams is currently being held without bond for the murder charge.  In addition, bonds for the following charges have been set at $20,000 each:

  • Possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime
  • Possession of a firearm by a convicted felon
  • Theft by receiving stolen property
