Tigers Hold Second Pre-Season Scrimmage

AUBURN - The 19th-ranked Auburn football held its second scrimmage of preseason camp with a two-hour session inside Jordan-Hare Stadium on Saturday morning.

Auburn opened the day going through positional drills and then moved into the scrimmage which went just over 70 plays. With temperatures hovering in the low 90s and little breeze inside the stadium, the Tigers had emphasis on tempo and were able to finish the scrimmage in strong fashion.

"I thought we ended with a lot of energy," head coach Gene Chizik said. "We did a lot more pace today than the first scrimmage and it was good. I thought both sides of the ball did some good things, but we still have a lot to work on."

At the midway point of the scrimmage, the Tigers broke into special teams work while offensive and defensive players rested and met for position work.

"We had a chance to work on our special teams, with live contact, on punt and kickoff coverage units and both return units," Chizik said. "It was a good tempo all day long. We have a long way to go."

After going through the first scrimmage of camp on Aug. 10, Chizik noted the younger players were more settled and better understood their assignments during today's scrimmage.

"A lot of young guys got a ton of reps, which is great," Chizik said. "There was more of a comfort level today (for the young players), but I'm more proud of their effort. I'm more impressed with the young guys pushing through this part of camp. They're tired, they're beat up, but they are trying to push through it. Their energy level and focus was better today."

The football team, along with members of the volleyball and soccer teams, will participate in Fan Day presented by Golden Flake on Sunday at Auburn Arena. Doors open at 1:30 p.m. CT and the autograph session begins at 2 p.m. CT.

The Tigers will open the 2011 season Sept. 3 vs. Utah State at Jordan-Hare Stadium, with kickoff set for 11 a.m. CT.
