Opelika's beloved "Miracle Field" targeted by vandals

OPELIKA, AL (WTVM) - The mayor of Opelika is outraged that a person or persons vandalized the West Ridge Baseball Complex over the weekend.  Mayor Gary Fuller says it's an insult to him and city, because the vandals targeted one of his favorite places, The Miracle Field.

At The Billy Hitchcock Miracle field in Opelika, everyone can play America's favorite pastime. The specially designed and equipped baseball facility allows handicapped children and adults to play ball. The field embodies all that is good, that's why it's one of Opelika's most beloved destinations.

"It looks like someone came out and spray painted all the doors, broke into one of the Miracle Fields up top and wrote a lot of nasty words on the doors and all that," explained Melvin Thomas, the park maintenance supervisor.

Vandals wrote, "It wasn't me" and "mother (expletive) can't see me" along with other scribbles that now blemish the building next to The Miracle Filed.

"We are so proud of The Miracle Field and the entire facility out at East Ridge, for some thugs to do this type of damage it's just absolutely terrible," said Mayor Gary Fuller.

Opelika maintenance crews are pressure washing the damage away, while wondering why anyone would want to damage a place where dreams come true and a child's smile can be brighter than the sun.

Thomas says it'll cost more than $10,000 to repair the damage. The mayor says whoever did this, will pay.

"I expect the police department to apprehend the individual or individuals involved and we will prosecute to the fullest extent of the law including reimbursement of every nickel and expense it's costing to repair that damage," said Fuller.

If you have any information on the person or persons responsible for the damage at West Ridge, you are asked to call the Opelika Police Department at (334) 705-5200.
