Woman, two kids killed in Columbus house fire

COLUMBUS, GA (WXTX) - A house fire at 3221 Decatur Street claimed the lives of three people.

The mother, Nordalie Douglas, 32,  and her two daughters Zakoya Bankston, 10, and Mackayla Gulley, 6, appear to have died from smoke inhalation.

Emergency crews received calls about the fire around 12:30 a.m., and flames were extinguished in about 10 minutes.

The fire appeared to be contained mostly to the attic, but the Columbus Fire Department reported difficulties getting into the house because of burglar bars on the windows.

The victims were transported to the Columbus Medical Center where all three were pronounced dead before 1:30 a.m. Their bodies are being taken to the state crime lab for autopsy.

Muscogee County School District tells Fox 54 the girls were students at Brewer Elementary School.  A team a counselors and social workers are assisting students and staff as they cope with the grief of losing their classmates.

There is no word on the cause of the fire and investigators say they are not suspecting foul play.  The fire remains under investigation.
