Opelika sportsplex to host state swimming tournaments

OPELIKA, AL (WTVM) - Alabama swimmers get ready to take your mark at the Opelika Sportsplex.  The Opelika Sportsplex will be hosting the Alabama Recreation and Parks Association 2012 State Swimming and Diving championships.

The athletic event is expected to generate about 2 million dollars for the city as close to 1,000 swimmers, divers and family members come to town for the event.

"This is big, big for Opelika, big for Lee County, East Alabama. It's going to be great for motels, restaurant merchants and a wonderful opportunity to show off this magnificent facility, I'm very excited," explained Opelika City Mayor, Gary Fuller.

Positive news of the economic event caps off a rough summer for the Sportsplex when health officials traced an E coli outbreak that severely sickened several children and adults back to the Splash Park at the Sportsplex.

City and health officials believe a dirty diaper that contained infected stool probably spread the infection through the water at the Splashpark.

"I think we are good to go now. Accidents happen, whether it is at White Water or there are a number of places where there is water and swimming pools and little children playing. So from time to time this happens it was a great learning experience for us and we are looking forward to the future," explained Fuller.

The swimming and diving tournament will take place the last weekend of July in 2012.
