Pilot in Fort Benning crash laid to rest

SPARTANBURG, S.C. (AP) - Funeral services for Army pilot Capt. John Hortman are being held in Spartanburg.

Floyd Mortuary announced that Saturday's services for the 30-year-old Inman native were being held at the First Baptist Church of Spartanburg. Burial will take place later at Arlington National Cemetery.

The special operations officer died with another soldier Aug. 8 when their helicopter crashed during a training operation at Fort Benning, Ga.

Hortman was a 1999 graduate of Byrnes High School and graduated from the U.S. Military Academy at West Point in 2004. He deployed three times to Iraq and was awarded the Bronze Star, Army Commendation Medal, Air Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Iraq Campaign Medal and Global War On Terrorism Medal.
