Columbus mom sorts $225K win during school drop off

From: Georgia Lottery Corp.

ATLANTA – A Columbus mom has won a grand Georgia Lottery prize.  Aaron Carrero, 36, won a $225,000 top prize playing the instant game Cash Crop.

Carrero won the prize just after dropping her son off at school.

"He missed the bus, so I took him to school," she said. "I went across the street and purchased a ticket, and I won."

Maple Mart, 8328 Veterans Parkway in Columbus, sold the lucky ticket. Carrero scratched it in her car.

"I looked at it about 10 times, and I couldn't believe it," she said. "I was in shock, and my heart was beating 100 mph."

The lucky winner anticipates enrolling into a college to earn a degree in nursing.

Since its first year, the Georgia Lottery Corp. has returned more than $12.7 billion to the state of Georgia for education. All Georgia Lottery profits go to pay for specific educational programs, including Georgia's HOPE Scholarship Program and Georgia's Pre-K Program. More than 1.3 million students have received HOPE, and more than 1.1 million 4-year-olds have attended the statewide, voluntary prekindergarten program.
