Whitewater course closer to becoming a reality

COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) - The Uptown Whitewater course is one step closer to becoming a reality.  September is going to be a big month for the Fountain City. After years of paperwork, construction will begin in the Chattahoochee River for whitewater rafting.

In just a few days an access road on the Phenix City side of the 13th Street Bridge will be built to the river.

Richard Bishop with Uptown Columbus says, "We'll do something from both sides it's just much easier to get in the river from the Alabama side than it is the Georgia side with the elevation change here and the Riverwalk it's much more difficult."

The course will offer group rafting and kayaking but to get these heavy rapids machinery must be put in and the dam taken out. "The first phase will be putting in the Alabama channel, then the Georgia channel and start taking down the dam sometime in the later part of the year and then after that start north of the East Phenix dam towards North Highland."

The dam usually overflowing with water, today,  is almost dry. The low elevation in water will be a huge advantage for the project.

"When we start to work, we're able to work in the dry for much of the day and that's very important."

The course is expected to be about 3 miles long and finished by late 2012 early 2013.
