Shaw Tops Smiths Station in Thursday Night Action

COLUMBUS, Ga. (WTVM) - LaVonte Williams scored two unconventional touchdowns to lead the Shaw Raiders to a 20-7 win over the Smiths Station Panthers on Thursday night at Kinnett Stadium.

Williams completed a fumble return early in the second quarter for his first TD. Shaw defensive tackle Joe Purter ripped the football from the grasp of Smiths quarterback Kelvin McTyre and returned it 32 yards before he had the ball stripped by Jacob Watson of the Panthers on the 30 yard line. The ball hopped into the arms of Williams, who completed the 62-yard return for touchdown.

The second score came on a Hail-Mary pass in the final second of the first half. Chandler Whittlesey's pass to Cedric Ashe was tipped by Brandon Powell, and Willams made the grab in the end zone for a 45-yard score. That made it 20-7 Shaw, and proved to be the final score of the game.

In other action on Thursday night, LaGrange lost to Spalding 27-21, and Lakeside beat Ashford 54-8.
