Government warns terror threats for small airplanes

COLUMBUS, GA - September 11, 2001 is a day we all remember with sadness and respect for those who sacrificed.  Now, 10 years later some in our country are still haunted by possible terrorist attacks.

"We need to be on alert at all times.  We never you know need to take our minds off of thinking everything is okay.  The next thing we know something is wrong," said Henry Spivey.

"You never know.  They might decide to strike Fort Benning and if it's a big bomb, we could all be impacted," said Laura Williams.

A new alert by the FBI and Homeland Security have issued a nationwide warning for small airplanes.  They say that some terrorists have considered renting private planes and loading them with explosives or even train to become flight instructors themselves.

Todd Shellnutt, the owner of Skyline Columbus, a local flight school, says they are working to do everything possible to make sure that does not happen.

"We do background checks.  Anyone who doesn't meet the TSA standards being able to show a birth certificate or United States passport is not allowed to even go to the plane," said Shellnutt.

Shellnutt says they also have security for the planes including special locks to the runway.

"The airplanes are locked and secured and tied down.  They are on a private ramp with closed caption television 24 hours, 7 days a week."

Residents like Shannon Johnson say they are thankful for all the precautions.

"[They are] Checking every person who walks through the doors.  That's what I like about it all.  They are checking everything," said Johnson.

The government says these alerts are precaution.  They say they have not received any specific or credible threats.
