-Bank robbery ends in shootout with two dead

COLUMBUS, GA - Parts of Midtown Columbus were shut down around noon as police investigated a bank robbery that ended in two men dead.

Columbus Police Chief Ricky Boren confirms to News Leader 9 that a masked man was seen running out of the MEA Federal Credit Union branch on Macon Road around 11:30 a.m. by a Columbus police officer.

The officer followed the suspect as he entered a black, two door pick-up truck.  There was another person in the pick-up truck.  The suspect drove the truck down Briarwood Avenue and eventually crashed near Gardenia Street, just a block from the bank.

Chief Boren said the suspects then put the truck in reverse and attempted to run over the police officer.

The suspects fired shots at the officer and the officer returned fire. The officer shot both suspects, killing one instantly while the other died later at the medical center.

The FBI is investigating the bank robbery and the GBI is investigating incident because it was an officer involved shooting.

Both the school district and the MEA Federal Credit Union have issued statements about this incident.

Polly Bell, MEA Federal Credit Union CEO, issued this statement:  "There was, in fact, an attempted robbery of the MEA Federal Credit Union branch on Macon Road this morning. Our staff acted swiftly and they are to be commended for handling this incident according to proper procedures. I applaud the Columbus Police Department for their immediate response and their work with our staff. The branch will be closed for a few days during the investigation."

Officials from the Muscogee County School District noted: "As a precaution, the Muscogee County Public Education Center, Wynnton, Brewer, Baker, Marshall, Rigdon went on lockdown following word of possible gunfire in the area of Macon Road.  An all-clear has been issued. No one at the schools or MCPEC are injured or involved."
