Investigation still under way at Uncle Bob's Storage

COLUMBUS, GA (WXTX) - Piles and piles of lost belongings and memories line Uncle Bob's Storage off Miller Road after a fire Thursday afternoon destroyed the facility.

115 units were set ablaze, taking days to extinguish it. The fire was so intense; the Columbus Fire Department had to bring in heavy equipment to take off the roof.

Fire Marshall Ricky Shores says, "To actually open up the top of the building and move some of the material around to get it extinguished it was very dangerous environment for firefighters to work in. You're not trying to do it fast you're trying to do it properly."

The fire is still under investigation.

The fire department is working with insurance investigators but Fire Marshall Ricky Shores says it's a difficult investigation. "These units are designed to keep people from forcing entry into them so it was difficult for the firefighters to get in."

The fire department has been in contact with many customers, all devastated at the loss.

"There's a story behind a lot of the stuff and it can't be replaced and it's quite devastating."
