"Trees" in Columbus are providing cell service

COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) - If you're near Shirley Winston Park and you look in the air, you may see something new. It's not a bird, it's not a plane, and it's not even a tree. It is a brand new cell phone tower.

AT&T put up two new towers, which they call mono-pines, in Columbus to help with cell phone service.

"We do this in communities where it is appropriate. We do it on a case by case basis to meet the needs of the community, to blend in to the background, in this case a park, and it helps us to provide coverage in the capacity we need but also to aesthetically fit in with the community," explained David Walker, the lead engineer for AT&T Georgia.

The other tower is near Williams Road in north Columbus.

They have been up for two weeks and AT&T providers say their customers should already be seeing a difference in their coverage.
