Family giving free dental for all children uninsured

COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) -  Melanie Smith recalls the day she met her baby boy, "we had a beautiful little boy and we were happy and went home with the little guy and when he was 13 days old, we had no signs anything was wrong, when he was 13 days old he had gotten a little cranky."

Melanie and her husband Ed took their newborn to the Medical Center, who immediately transferred him to the Children's Hospital in Atlanta.

"We had 2 surgeries and my son just got progressively sick very fast and he was just too little to overcome that so we lost him to septic shock after about 48 hours of being sick."

The baby boy died from a rare blood disorder.  His body produced too many red blood cells which caused his organs to fail.

Despite the loss, Melanie says they were blessed enough to spend 13 wonderful days with their son, and they want his memory to live on in other children.

With Dr. Smith being a dentist, and Melanie a hygienist, they decided to help other kids who needed dental help.

On Russ's Birthday, October 13,  they will give free dental cleanings to uninsured children. Dr Smith says, "working on some children who might not otherwise have an opportunity to be seen and get cleaning and things like that, we thought it'd be a nice way to remember our son."

"With kids you can see so many more in an hour so we really think that day is going to be a lot of fun.." Added Melanie

The Smith's hope to make the free dental work every year in memory of their son; and while they remember their son, they are also looking to the future. They are expecting another child in five weeks.

"I don't think you move on, you always take it with you but you have a choice you can let it define who you are to be a parent of an angel, or, you have a choice that you can move on and do great things."

Remembering the child they lost by helping other children in need.

To make an appointment,  call their office at 706-494-58-86 and ask to make an appointment for Russ's day. They will be open from 10 am until 7pm.

If you can pay, The Smith's are asking that donations be made instead  to children's healthcare of Atlanta or Chattahoochee Valley CASA.
