Jury selection begins in Lee Co. deputy's murder trial

LEE COUNTY, AL (WTVM) – Family, friends, and co-workers of Deputy James Anderson gathered at the Lee County Sheriff's Office for a memorial. Saturday marked the two year anniversary of his death.

Deputy Anderson's alleged killer, Gregory Henderson, attended his last status hearing in court before his capital murder trial that is set to begin Monday.  He pleaded not guilty by reason of mental disease or defect in the killing of Deputy Anderson during a traffic stop in Smiths Station.

Prosecutors say Henderson, 39, was not cooperative during a traffic stop and hit the deputy, pinning him under the car.

Henderson faces either the death penalty or life in prison if convicted.

Major Tommy Carter says "I know next week is going to be a tough week for all of us with the trial starting. But we have each other to lean on and we have Gods support and love to see us through."

News Leader 9 will be in court Monday when jury selection begins.
