Comer recreation center damaged by rain

COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) - For Chris Johnson, the Comer Recreation Center is more than just a building. Call it a hang out spot, or home away from home, Johnson has had made many memories at the gym and auditorium over the years.

"As a community we would come in here and box and I even remember a bowling alley down in the basement,"said Johnson.

Heavy rainfall over the past few weeks has caused severe damage to the center. The roof above the auditorium collapsed and the gym has been destroyed by rain water.

Columbus Parks and Recreation Director James Worsley says it could be a few weeks before we know exactly what will happen with the gym. He says more inspections are needed before anything can be decided.

Chris Johnson says he wants the recreation center to stick around.

"I would like to see it restored. It's a great place. I think it needs to stay in the community," said Johnson.

The auditorium sustained storm damage once before. This time, about 6 inches of rain caused the roof to collapse. Worsley says, for now, the building is not safe for anyone to be inside and has been shut down.

Meanwhile, personnel have been relocated to the Fox Service Center on 5th Avenue in Columbus.
