Lee County Sheriff's Department remembers fallen deputy

OPELIKA, AL (WTVM) - After a jury found Gregory Henderson, 39, guilty of murdering Lee County Sheriff's Deputy James Anderson, the fallen deputy's friends and colleagues say they will always remember Anderson for his kindness.

Lee County Sheriff Jay Jones says September 24, 2009 was a day that turned the Sheriff's office upside-down as Deputy Katie Bonham frantically called for help for fallen Deputy Anderson.

"I was hoping that what I was hearing on our communications network, our radio traffic, was not really what was occurring," explained Jones.

During the murder trial for Anderson's killer, they had to re-live those chilling moments as a dash camera video was played with Bonham's cries for help saying, "Get somebody out here now get a 1052 (an ambulance) out here now.  There is a car on 46 (Deputy Anderson's badge number)."

Henderson, the man found guilty of murdering Deputy Anderson with his car, faces either life in prison without parole or death by lethal injection.

While Sheriff Jay Jones says a guilty verdict is justice for Anderson's death, he wants others to know what an honorable deputy he was.

"Not only was he a good law enforcement officer, but he was a mentor, he was a father figure to a lot of our younger deputies, he was one of our training officers."

Jones explains Anderson's favorite thing was helping others.

"He truly was a person that if you mentioned I need some help with this or that, be careful because the next morning you might wake up, and he's in the yard doing it," explained the Sheriff.

Anderson's family, friends, and the Sheriff's Office, have been haunted by the memory of this day.

Jones says the future is about remembering Anderson every day and letting his promise to never let a fellow deputy down encourage others to work as hard as he did.
