Lions join newly-formed PIFL

COLUMBUS, Ga. - The Columbus Lions officially announced the formation of the new Professional Indoor Football League on Thursday.

Joining the Lions in the new league will be four former Southern Indoor Football League teams, the Albany Panthers, Alabama Hammers (Huntsville), Louisiana Swashbucklers (Lake Charles), and Richmond Raiders. A new franchise, the Knoxville Nighthawks, will be the sixth team in the league.

The SIFL disbanded as teams went their own ways geographically and for travel reasons. Several from the SIFL Southwest Division broke off to form the Lone Star Football League in Texas, whose champion may yet play that of the PIFL.

The Lions 2012 schedule will feature home games on Saturdays. On March 3 will play a preseason game against an opponent yet to be determined.

Their home opener is set for March 17 versus the Knoxville NightHawks.
