COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) - His story of he and his family's battle with a debilitating illness has captured the hearts of millions who watch "Extreme Home: Makeover Edition". Now, Jeremy Williams is looking to help those who struggle with the disease.

Williams and his family came out Saturday to show their support at the 2nd Annual Run for Jeremy.

Williams suffers from Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), also referred to as Lou Gehrig's disease. He is not the only suffering from the disease in this area, Don Stephens who lives in Fortson, GA was recently diagnosed. "I was diagnosed in May of this year and the funds here go toward ALS Clinic in Atlanta up at Emory, it was really good fundraiser we appreciate the support," Stephens said.

Stephens's family also came out in big numbers, hoping to continue the efforts to one day find a cure for ALS.

Lou Gehrig's disease or ALS is caused when cells in the spinal cord start to deteriorate causing muscles to weaken and eventually have severe effects on motor skills.

News Leader 9's Laura Ann Sills and her sister Jenny spearheaded the run for a man they have known and loved for quite some time.

"We started it because our coach has ALS and while he knows there is not going to be a cure in his lifetime, he still wants to help find a cure," Sills said.

Sills says more than 600 runners raced for a cure and raked in $3,000 Saturday. Jeremy Williams' wife Jennifer says she is astounded by the overwhelming support.

"We are just so very thankful to our community, our community has just been so supportive of our family and God has just placed specific people in key spots and they just constantly bless us with what they do to show their support to our family," Williams said.
