WTVM-TV: News, Weather and Sports for Columbus, GAEast Alabama commissioner resigns amidst YouTube video scandal
RANDOLPH COUNTY, AL - Thomas "June" Waldrep, the 80-year-old Randolph County Commissioner who served District 4 for 21 years, resigned from his position Tuesday morning.
His resignation follows the posting of a video on YouTube that records Waldrep using racial slurs to describe the young members of a local Boys and Girls club.
PublicAccessTV.Org uploaded the video to YouTube on Oct. 3, 2011. Waldrep's resignation letter was dated Oct. 10 and was turned in to the Randolph County Commission on Oct. 11.
In his letter, Waldrep said, "In my 80 years of life I have tried to live my life to be a part of the solution to problems and not be part of the problem."
The letter also offered an apology to the Commission and Randolph County citizens:
"To my fellow Commissioners and all citizens of this county, both young and old, I offer my apology for any words spoken by me which have offended you. I trust my actions over the years have spoken much louder than my words," Waldrep said.
He ended the resignation letter with a statement of thanks for being allowed to help lead in Randolph County, which he described as the best place to work, live and raise a family.
Waldrep said in addition to serving as a commissioner for 21 years, he also served as a laborer for the Commission for 15 years.
News leader 9 learned that another Randolph County commissioner has also resigned.
Chairman Doug Sheppard left his place on the commission Tuesday. He is currently facing charges and scheduled to begin a trial at the end of this month.
He is accused of using government services for personal business.
